Elise Simmons

Services for Elise Simmons of Torrance, California will be held on Tuesday, March 27, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at A.M. Gamby Funeral Home in Lomita, California, with burial in Green Hills Memorial Park. Viewing will be held on Monday, March 26, 2012 from 4-8 p.m. also at the funeral home. Mrs. Simmons passed away in Torrance, California on March 17, 2012 at the age of 93. Elise was born on May 10, 1918 to William Edward and Juanita Mae Noles in Huntingdon, Tennessee. She was a lovely and talented lady, who for most of her life loved playing the piano. Shortly after attending Union University in Jackson, Tennessee where she pursued a music degree, she moved to Hollywood, California where, through mutual friends, was re-introduced to Woody Simmons whom she had known in Tennessee. In 1941, not long after becoming reacquainted with each other, they fell in love and were married. Over the next few years, they became proprietors of several businesses in San Pedro and Carson, California, opening one of the first and finest steak house restaurants in Carson. In 1955, they opened "Woody's" Market and Liquor in Carson - an icon - until it was sold in 1982. Elise and Woody were virtually inseparable until his death in August 2000. Elise and Woody were active and life members of the Long Beach and Torrance Elks Lodge until declining health forced them to curtail their involvement. The matriarch of the family, Elise is survived by her daughter, Rita Jelsma of Torrance, California; four grandsons, Larry (Carrie) Duncan and Randy Duncan of Idaho Falls, Idaho, John Jelsma of Mead, Colorado, Jarrad Jelsma of Gardena, California; three granddaughters, Sherry Partridge of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Jeanine Vaughn of Texas and Tiffany Bemann of Westbrook, Maine; twelve great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; one brother, James Darrel Noles of Huntingdon, Tennessee, several dear nieces and nephews, cousins, and many life-long and new-found friends. Elise will be sorely missed by her loving family and friends; however, we find comfort in knowing she is no longer suffering and has gone to be with the Lord.
