Obituary Condolences

Eloise Jane Caldwell

Eloise was a native Californian, born in Los Angeles on September 8, 1923. She left us on April 29, 2012, after a long illness. Eloise loved the beach and lived near it most of her life. She enjoyed beach volleyball and tennis and relished watching high surf and lightning over the water. It is fitting that now she will go back to her beloved ocean. After a career in insurance, Eloise want back to college and received her teaching credential. She made a new career as an ESL teacher at Belmont High School, where she taught for over 20 years and made many close friends. Eloise was predeceased by her parents, Sherman Laird Caldwell and Hazel Harding, by her brother, Robert S. Caldwell and by her devoted companion, Walter Schiller. She will always be loved and remembered by her son, Donald L. Durward and his wife, Gay, as well as by her two grandsons, Derek and his wife, Lisa and Douglas and his wife, Amy Beth. She was G.G. to Alexandria, Dylan, Devin, Donovan and Melinda. She also leaves many nieces and nephews, whom she had the joy of seeing at a family wedding very recently. Her many, many friends will dearly miss her as well. The family extends boundless love and gratitude to Melencia Ramos, whose TLC and devotion as Eloise's caretaker for the last five years were both remarkable and inspiring. Thanks also to Delia, her "weekend angel" and to Kent Caldwell, who did so much to make his Aunt El's life easier. At her request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. There will be a party in her honor, and information will be forthcoming. In lieu of flowers, please honor Eloise's memory with a donation to: Manhattan Beach Rotary Foundation, P.O. Box 691, Manhattan Beach, Ca. 90266. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
