Emil Guerrero Obituary
Emil Guerrero

A San Pedro centenarian, Emil Guerrero, 102, has peacefully passed, June 20, 2016. Born in Durango, Mexico of Hilario Guerrero and Francisca De La Torre, he traveled with his family in 1916 to settle on Terminal Island. After his Father's death, when he was 6, the family moved to Wilmington (Cruces St.) so his grandfather, Querino, could help his mother raise the children. Taking odd jobs from the age of twelve, Emil worked as an adult at the family's Harbor Canning Company, also trying his own hand in Wilmington Fisheries, and eventually working as a machinist and steam engineer at Todd Shipyard often blowing the 7 a.m. whistle. In 1939 he obtained his private pilot license and volunteered for the civil air patrol during World War II. Emil's recreation was competing as an amateur boxer at the Wilmington Bowl. He often worked two jobs until he retired from Todd Shipyard and continued to work in his early retirement years at Juanita's Foods.

He married the love of his life Roberta Contreras in 1937 and moved to La Rambla area in San Pedro. As a family man, he was a life long member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church. They had four children: Eddie Main, Robert, Gloria and Emily Guerrero. Sadly in 2003, they lost Eddie, their angel, Emily who had a lifelong disability and, of course, his dog, Chap. He is also preceded in death by his loving wife, Roberta, by a wonderful brother and best-friend, Albert (Ruth), loving sisters: Rita (Ernest) Gregg, Josephine (Louie) Salas and Frances (Paul) Maynez.

Emil loved the ocean, fishing and a cold beer in Mexico! He spent his sunset years enjoying the beauty of Royal Palms!

He leaves his loving son, Robert and loving daughter, Gloria Guerrero. A Grandson, Robert (Linda) Guerrero, great-grandsons, Robert and Noah Guerrero and many loving nieces, nephews, and family members. A sincere thanks to caregivers; Emily, Leonard, Gil, and Violy. Burial is private. Sign guestbook at dailybreeze.com
