Ethel Mae (Alfson) Echelberger Obituary
Ethel Mae Echelberger was born in Wisner, Nebraska on September 3, 1926 and died at her home in Torrance, California on February 15, 2011. She was the much-loved youngest of the seven children born to Alfred and Louise Schach Alfson. Her six siblings Harold, Violet (Burgess), Nial, Warren, Elaine, (Witt), and Glen Alfson all predeceased her. Following her graduation from Wisner high school in 1944, Ethel Mae joined her sister, Elaine, in Santa Monica, California. She worked in a defense plant until the war in the Pacific ended in 1949. She studied cosmetology and received her license in 1947. She was employed by Southern California Water Company in 1955, where she met Clarence Jay Echelberger whom she married in 1955. Throughout their long life together, Ethel Mae and Jay enjoyed a wide circle of dear friends and traveled extensively. The great sorrows in her life were the death of her daughter, Bonnie, in 2002 and Jay in 2004. In her last years, she continued to enjoy dancing and participation in a singing group. She busied herself in volunteer work with the Providence Trinity Care Hospice Foundation, where donations may be made in lieu of flowers. Ethel Mae is survived by two stepsons, Larry Echelberger and James Echelberger; seven grandchildren, Amy, Eric, James Jr., and John Echelberger, Jon Hicks and Joel and Jesse Cox; and ten great-grandchildren Stephanie, Desirae and Mia Cox, Ian and Sean Hicks and Matthew, Ryan, Connor, Cameron, and Cohen Echelberger. Seven nieces and nephews will remember her fondly: Virginia Alfson Kelly, Robert Alfson, John Alfson, Ken Alfson, David Alfson, Cara Alfson, and Jane Alfson Westerhold. She will be deeply missed by her dear friend Herbert Greiser and by the Preston family, treasured friends and neighbors for almost half a century. A memorial service will be held on March 12, 2011 at a private residence. The last of her generation, her remains will be placed next to Jay's at the Fairview Cemetery in Scottsbluff, Nebraska.
