Eugene "Doby" Dobos, 88, of El Segundo, California passed away Monday evening, May 13, 2013. He was born in Clinton, Ohio on February 13, 1925 to Michael and Ethyl Dobos. His parents immigrated to the U.S. from Yugoslavia/Hungarian area of Europe. Mr. Dobos served in the Merchant Marines during WWII. He married Helen Bachtel in 1947 and moved to Southern California in 1949 with their son for a new start. After working briefly for the city of E.S. and the hyperion Doby he began a 32 year career as maintenance supervisor with Standard Oil/Chevron refinery of El Segundo before retiring from there. Other part time jobs along the way were Security person at Wylie Laboratories in E.S. and bartending at the Chante', Charcoal Broiler and Bay 90's. Helen and Doby once were co-owners of the Vagabond Cocktail Lounge on Prairie Avenue near Hollywood Park. Some of his outside interests included Santa Anita, fishing, Del Mar, golf, Hollywood Park and operas. Dob knew his way around the kitchen quite well and excelled outdoors with the barbecue. A huge Cleveland Browns fan he also followed his beloved Indians. He admired Bob Feller, Jim Brown, Ted Williams and Otto Graham. Doby is survived by his wife of 65 years, Helen; older sisters, Irene (Simi, Ca.) and Della (San Pedro, Ca.); younger brother, Dick (Grand Junction, Co.); daughter, Deborah (Centennial, Co.) and son, Bruce; granddaughters, Randi (Silver Lake, Ca.) and Amber (San Francisco, Ca.).
