Frances C. Hemnes-Nakata Obituary
A lifetime resident of San Pedro and Rolling Hills Estates, Frances was born on April 9, 1955 to Marie and Andrew Hemnes. Frances was surrounded by family and friends when she passed away on March 28, 2011 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Los Angeles. She had battled cancer for 3 years. She was due to celebrate her fifty-sixth birthday on April 9, 2011. Frances attended Seventh Street Elementary, Dana Jr. High and San Pedro High schools. She continued on to Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and graduated from Cal State University Dominguez Hills with a Bachelors degree in Business Finance. Fran worked at USC County Medical Center for 32 years. To many people, Fran will be most remembered for her incredible generosity. She was always the first to volunteer her time to make leis for the dancers of Kanani Kalama Hula Studio to support Peninsula High School's ASB especially its Walk for Life fundraiser for cancer and the girls' basketball program. She also helped to coordinate L.A. County Medical Center's Adopt a Family program and March of Dimes organizations. However, Fran's greatest passion was giving away her homemade baked goods especially her delicious chocolate chip cookies. Fran was preceded in death by her mother, Marie, in 1974. She is survived by her husband, Norman; daughter, Nicole; brother, Rex Hemnes (Rozanne) of San Pedro; cousins, Gary Thompson of Ames, Iowa; and Delon Thompson, and Mike Hemnes, both of Tucson, AZ; nephews, Andy Hemnes (Brittne) of San Clemente, Alan Bates (Julie) of Rancho Palos Verdes and Chris Bates (Thalina) of San Pedro; nieces, Jill Rose of Lake Forest and Karin Bock (Dave) of Newport Coast, CA; great nephews, Colby, Conner, Drew, Jared and Brandon; and great nieces, Tessa, Hallie and Nicoline. Fran's greatest wish was to see Nicole graduate from college. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Wellness Committee, 109 W. Torrance Blvd., Redondo Beach CA 90277 (310) 376-3550. Visitation will be on Friday, April 8, 2011 from 5-8 pm at McNerney's Mortuary, San Pedro. A Funeral Mass will offered on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at 10 am at Holy Trinity Catholic Church followed by interment at Green Hills Memorial Park.
