Frank J. Mazzola Obituary
Frank J. Mazzola
April 6, 1919 — March 15, 2016

Passed away in Lomita on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 following a brief illness. He leaves his two daughters, Sandi and Kim, three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Frank was born in Mount Morris, a small town in New York State. He was the oldest of five children, his brother and three sisters predeceased him. He dropped out of school in the 8th grade to help support his family during the "Great Depression", then voluntarily joined the Army in World War II. Frank served 3½ years of combat in the Pacific in WW II, mustering out as a Private First Class.
He married the love of his life, Josephine, in 1945. They drove across the United States to settle in Southern California in 1950. He worked for 35 years at Dow Chemical, retiring as a shift supervisor.
Frank then began a second career in volunteer work. Among the many organizations he was involved in were the Private Industrial Council, the Elks and Moose Clubs, the Sons of Italy, the Lomita Chamber of Commerce and St. Margaret Mary Church, which he attended regularly. He was a longtime member of the Holy Name Society.
Frank enjoyed playing tennis into his eighties, attended Dodgers games for many years, avidly followed the Lakers, and loved big band music. Before her death in 2007, he and Josephine traveled all over the world, visiting every continent but Africa and Australia. They loved dancing, entertaining their many friends, and holding family gatherings.
Friendships meant everything to Frank, for many years he attended an annual reunion of his Army buddies. He kept a list, crossing off their names one by one as they passed away. At the time of his death, there are only a handful left.
The viewing will be held at A.M. Gamby Mortuary in Lomita on March 22 from 4 to 8 PM, with a rosary starting at 7:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held at St Margaret Mary's Church in Lomita on March 23 at 10:00 AM with internment to follow at Green Hills Cemetery.
