Fred Wade Oldham, born December 23, 1924 in Long Beach, CA, died April 17, 2014 at his home in Redondo Beach, CA. He was 89 years old. He is survived by his beloved wife, Beth; and four children from his first marriage, Ron, Mindy, and twins, Terry and Sandy; two step-sons, Jon Feicht and Eric Nelson; and a step-daughter, Sue Elliott; as well as three grandchildren; Andrew Walk, Jonathan and Stephen Oldham.

Fred was the only child of Harold and Annie Oldham and spent his childhood years growing up in Long Beach. He attended Polytechnic High School and loved to body surf in his youth. He also had a beautiful tenor voice and sang with the St. Luke's Choristers, a renowned group which also sang in several movies. He later sang at his home church, St. Peter's Episcopal Church in San Pedro and was a member of the bell choir. Fred graduated with a BS from UCLA and was a member of the Phi Psi Fraternity.

Fred was a pilot with the Army Air Force in WWII and flew missions over the Himalayas (known as "The Burma Hump"). He earned 6 medals during the war including the Distinguished Flying Cross.

After the war, Fred lived the rest of his life in Southern CA. He married and lived in Manhattan Beach, San Pedro, Palos Verdes, Redondo Beach, Rancho Palos Verdes, and Oceanside. Upon his discharge from the military, he began teaching English in Lemoore, CA but soon began a career as a pilot that spanned 38 years with United Air Lines finally retiring as a Captain of 747's.

Fred was a man of great humor, honesty, strength, leadership and responsibility who loved his family tremendously. He will be greatly missed.

Services will be held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 1648 W. 9th Street, San Pedro, CA on Friday, May 16th at 3:30 p.m. A reception will follow. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
