Freydoun "Fred" Fassa Obituary
September 1, 1926 - June 9, 2011

From the high Alps of Switzerland to a serene mountain valley in the San Bernardino Mountains…go figure. It's life. And this was a life well lived.

Fred Fassa, a lively part of the history of Big Bear Lake, left us on June 9, 2011. He was born in Tehran, Iran, educated and married in Switzerland, and migrated to California in 1956, where he later worked as a mechanical engineer for Garret Air Research's space shuttle program. On weekends, he did what he loved so much -- skied the mountains of Snow Summit. He was there from the beginning, and maintained his certified ski instructor credentials long after others might have let theirs lapse. Everyone in Big Bear knew Freddie, or so it seemed; he was a jokester, a character, a force of nature and a generous soul. He's one of the last old timers - one of the original cowboys of Big Bear.

He leaves behind his daughters, Fifi and Farideh; their husbands, Tim and Dan; and his beloved grandchildren, Emilie, Ryan and Jonathan. He is loved and will be missed by his many friends and relatives worldwide.

Freddie will ultimately be interred with his wife, Jackie, and his father, Ali Naghi Fassa, in Switzerland. A celebration of Fred's life will take place in Big Bear at Snow Summit Mountain on Tuesday, July 12 at 3:00 PM. Please take 'East Mountain Xpress' chair lift to the top, where we will remember Fred from one of his favorite places, "View Haus". Please feel free to email Fred's granddaughter, Emilie, at [email protected] should you have any inquiries or thoughts you'd like to share. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
