Gaetano (Tommy) Iacono

1926-2015

Gaetano (Tommy) Iacono passed away peacefully at home with his wife of 63 years by his side on November 19th, 2015. Tommy was born in San Pedro, CA, to Vincenzo and Maria Iacono on June 10th 1926, and lived there all of his 89 years, attending San Pedro High School, and then being actively employed for 4 decades in San Pedro's number one industry of the time- commercial fishing. He began fishing with his Father, Vincenzo, and later co-owned the Saint Rita with his two brothers and a brother–in- law. He later worked for Star Kist Tuna and Todd Shipyard. The "catch" of his life was his wife Pauline, whom he met in1951, and they were married the following year. They had two sons together, Vincent Anthony (who precedes him in death), and James Michael. He was an ardent supporter of "Jimmy", attending every sporting event he could, and valued providing a parochial school education for him at Mary Star of the Sea School in San Pedro and Loyola High School in Los Angeles. He was a long time member of the Italian Catholic Federation at Mary Star Parish, and helped with many of their fund raising activities over the years. He enjoyed traveling abroad, cruises, and trips to Las Vegas. He is preceded in death by all four of his siblings, Christine, Virginia, Richard, and Frank. He is survived by his wife Pauline, son James (Vicki) grandchildren Tessa Tyson (Mark), and Erik Iacono, great granddaughter Anabelle, sister-in-laws Sandy Iacono, Delfina Iacono, Annie Nobilione, Nancy (Sal) Ventimiglia, brother-in-law Jim (Kathy) Nobilione, and 19 nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all. Visitation will be held at McNerneys Mortuary 5 to 7p.m on Tuesday November 24th followed by vigil service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be at Mary Star of the Sea Church on Wednesday November 25th at 10:30 a.m. The burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Trinity Hospice Care or Mary Star High School Building Fund. Please sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com or dailybreeze.com.
