George William "Bill" Hanes Obituary
Bill Hanes was born June 21, 1919 in St. Joseph, Missouri. The son of George Boone Hanes and Mattie Conway Hanes, he was the adored baby brother to three older sisters, Nelle, Leona and Nadine. Bill's family moved to Inglewood, California when he was ten years old. An exceptional tennis player and captain of the high school tennis team, Bill graduated from Inglewood High School in 1937. He attended Loyola College, earning accolades as a standout member of the college tennis team. Bill married his high school sweetheart, Eleanor Spaulding in 1940. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II and was aboard a troopship carrier headed for the invasion of Japan when the armistice was signed. He went on to spend a year in Japan with the occupation forces. Bill worked many years as a young man with his sister, Nelle and her husband, Tony Hayes in their Inglewood-based millinery business, Toni Hats. Upon Nelle and Tony's retirement, Bill changed the name to Homecraft Supplies, continuing in the same location until 1969. Bill and Eleanor had four children, Toni, Tina, Toby, and Trudi who were raised in Inglewood until the family moved to Mission Viejo in 1968. Bill taught tennis for many years at the Deane Homes recreation center. Movie star handsome and a bona fide gentleman, Bill got along with absolutely everybody. He possessed a wry sense of humor and had a quip for every situation. Bill and Eleanor were a devoted couple for sixty-eight years until her death in 2008. Both were predeceased by their daughter Toni Smith in 1996. Bill is survived by his daughter, Tina Fulton (Andy) of San Clemente; son, Toby Hanes (Vicki) of Vacaville; daughter, Trudi Tessalone (Tim) of Redondo Beach; and former son-in-law, Michael Smith. He leaves grandchildren, Dawn Smith, Damon Smith, Casey Fulton, Kelsie Fulton Peterman, Tyler Hanes, Troy Tessalone, Trevor Tessalone, Tori Tessalone; and great-granddaughter, Dana Smith. Services are planned for Thursday, February 3 at 10:00 a.m. at O'Connor Mortuary in Laguna Hills. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
