George William Harris, Jr.

George William Harris, Jr. passed away peacefully while sleeping at home at age 92 on May 29th, 2012 in San Pedro, California. George was born in Lompoc, California, the 7th child and only boy of George William Harris Sr. and Julia Corning Harris. He is survived by his beloved wife of 68 years, Martha; loving daughter, Marcia Hart (Brooke); granddaughter, Alexandra and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his son Gregory William. George attended Lompoc High School and was active on the school tennis team, theater productions and wrote a sports column for the city newspaper. He regularly attended the First Baptist Church of Lompoc with his family having been the family's church since 1885. He graduated in 1936 and entered USC at age 16, graduating from USC in 1940. During World War II George was a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army. For 3 1/2 years he was a medical administrative officer with the Army's First Field Hospital stationed in New Guinea and the Philippines. While in the service he married the love of his life, Martha Livingston. After the service George and Martha moved to San Pedro where he worked as treasurer for Dunlap's Department Stores and later in real estate. They attended First Presbyterian Church of San Pedro. Upon retirement George and Martha enjoyed traveling, visiting family in England, Lompoc, Sonora and Madera. However, they were never happier then when home in San Pedro surrounded by good friends and neighbors. The family wishes to thank George's wonderful, caring caregivers, Lillian and Mary Jean that were with him for over 2 years. There will be a celebration of George's life on Saturday, July 14th at First Baptist Church, Lompoc at 3:00pm.
