Grace Marie Smith Obituary
Grace Marie Smith, 84, of San Pedro and Rancho Palos Verdes, passed away of natural causes Thursday morning at Little Company of Mary Hospital after intermittent illnesses. For many years, Grace was the greatly loved organist, and conductor of the handbell choir, at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church in Rolling Hills Estates. A native of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Grace was the daughter of Gustave A. Rinck and Grace Boerman Rinck. She graduated from Westminster Choir College in Princeton, New Jersey, where she studied under Alexander McCurdy. For many years, she was the organist at the Fox Valley Presbyterian Church, Geneva, Illinois, where her former husband, Dr. Dana Prom Smith, was the pastor. The late Dr. John Williamson considered Grace one of the finest organists to graduate from Westminster Choir College. She was a member of many musical organizations, and particularly enjoyed her yearly visits to the Bach Festival in Carmel, California, with her longtime friend, Milla Tarr. Grace was a politically active liberal Democrat, and a retired school teacher from the Los Angeles Unified School District. Grace is survived by brothers, Robert Rinck, of Marne, Michigan, and Richard Rinck, of Grand Rapids, Michigan; children, Timothy Smith, of San Clemente, Paul Smith, of Torrance, and Elizabeth (Michael) Esparza, of Redondo Beach; granddaughter, Dana Marie Silva, Esq., of Redondo Beach; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her former husband, of Flagstaff, AZ, also survives. Her parents and an older brother, Bill Rink, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, preceded Grace in death. Grace cherished God, music and her family and friends above all else. She will be sorely missed by everyone who knew her. She fought the good fight and persevered to the end with grace and dignity. A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, March 12, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, 26825 Rolling Hills Road, Rolling Hills Estates, CA 90274. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, her family requests contributions be made in her honor to St. Luke's Presbyterian Church or a charity of your choice.
