H. Fred Dietrich Obituary
H. Fred Dietrich

June 25, 1919- November 19, 2014

A Redondo Beach resident since 1948, H. Fred Dietrich passed peacefully in his home from natural causes on Wednesday evening, November 19, 2014. He is survived by his daughters, Melva Morrow of Torrance, and Alice Carter, of Redondo Beach. Also surviving is his brother, Phillip R. Dietrich, of Tucson, Arizona, and son-in-laws, Bobby Carter of Redondo Beach, and Art Zimmerla of Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Fred was preceded in death by his wife of 67 years, Alexa Jean Simpson Dietrich, his daughter, Lorna Zimmerla, and his son, Daniel Dietrich. He was lovingly known as "Grumpa" to his eight grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.
Fred served on the USS Honolulu and survived the attack on Pearl Harbor while working in the engine room on the USS Phoenix. His service to the U. S. Navy extended 20 years and ended as Naval Recruiter in Redondo Beach. Many friends and family still referred to him simply as "The Chief" due his status at retirement. He later also retired from the U. S. Postal Service where he worked in their Redondo Beach office for 15 years. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
