Obituary Condolences

Harvey M. Horwich

1929 - 2013

Harvey Horwich, 84, passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013 of natural causes at his home. Harvey was born in 1929 to Lillian and Hyman Horwich in Chicago Illinois. Harvey graduated from UCLA where he met and married the love of his life June Bronson. He was active in the community as a Boy Scout and Indian Guide Leader, Little League manager and basketball coach for his children's groups; active member of Torrance Kiwanis, and a two-term president of Temple Menorah. Harvey and June helped found the South Bay branch of the Special Olympics. He served the City of Torrance as a Parks and Recreation Commissioner, Planning Commissioner, on the Civic Center Authority and as a City Councilman. In 2012, Harvey was honored for his 32 years of service to the City, the third longest serving person in Torrance's 100 year history. The City of Torrance recognized him as an "Ideal Citizen." Harvey retired a few years ago from his printing business of almost 50 years. He is survived by his wife, June; and his brother, Williard; his children, Allen Horwich, Pamela (Horwich) and Michael Roossin, Michelle and Jeffrey Horwich, Jill and Robert Horwich, and Paul Horwich; his grandchildren, Melissa Horwich (Robert), Chase Roossin (Pamela), Joshua Roossin (Pamela), Carolyn Horwich (Robert), and David Horwich (Jeffrey). He will also be missed by the many nieces and nephews who grew up calling him "Uncle Genius". Harvey was known as a great friend, mentor, and mediator. A great listener, he'd always have time to hear your problems and often knew how to fix them. He had a sense of humor, but never made a joke at someone else's expense. And if you ever wonder why you don't have to pay for Public Parking in Torrance, you can thank Harvey. His burial service will be at Groman Eden Memorial Park in Mission Hills on Tuesday, October 8th at 1pm. It will be followed by a Memorial service at 4pm at the Toyota Hall in the Torrance Civic Center. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
