Helen G. Becks Obituary
Helen G. Becks nee Friedman was born November 28, 1922 in Grandma Dopheide's house, in Carroll, Iowa, while her mother Clara was visiting. Her father, John Friedman was notified of the birth of "a very fine girl". Helen grew up on a farm outside Ogallala, Nebraska. She rode her horse to Keith County, District #22 rural school with her brother Harold and she graduated with the 1940 class of Ogallala High School, known as "our quiet country girl". Helen then worked for ten years in Sioux City, Iowa at her uncle's insurance company. She loved stenography and kept meticulous records throughout her lifetime. She next followed friends to Great Lakes Naval Station in Waukegan, Illinois, where she would be introduced to William J. Becks, who was stationed there with an Army unit. Their first date was on Lake Michigan in Kenosha, Wisconsin, under a full moon. Helen and William were married at St. Luke's Church in Ogallala, Nebraska on June 10, 1953 and honeymooned at Chateau Frontenac Quebec. As an army wife, Helen was stationed in Germany, where her daughter, Alicia was born in 1956 and then in Hot Springs, Arkansas, where her son, Bill was born in 1959. Next stop was the Presidio in San Francisco and another tour in Germany before retiring and settling in San Pedro, California in 1966. While the kids were in school, Helen was a member of Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Since 1974 she has been an active member of the Chapel of Fort MacArthur. Helen enjoyed many club activities and was a past president of the Tuesday Club at Anderson Senior Center. Helen loved to sing and dance, travel and chronicle her trips, play cards and correspond with family and friends. She loved her sister Alma's Sunday evening phone calls, memories of late night chats with sister, Estella, visits with nieces and nephews, the special relationship with God-daughter, Kim and adopted grandchildren, Hannah and Ben. Not long ago, she was playing games with great grandson, Chris and introducing him to her favorite spots in San Pedro. Helen enjoyed Alicia taking over holidays, her home away from home in Glendale, dog sitting and having her spirits lifted by son- in-law, Tim's humor and martinis. She loved hearing son Bill's voice when phoning from Thailand in between visits home. Helen passed away very peacefully, at home on July 21, 2011. A Rosary will be held at McNerney's Mortuary, Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at 6:00pm, with visitation starting at 4:00pm. The Funeral Mass will be held at Fort MacArthur Chapel on Friday, August 5 at 10:00am. You are welcomed leave a comment or share memories at www.mcnerneysmortuary.com or www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
