Henrietta "Etta" (Botsford) Fox


1921 - 2011 Obituary Condolences
Etta Botsford Fox, a long time resident of Long Beach, California died on January 2, 2011, surrounded by her loving family. Etta was born October 3, 1921, in Nebraska to Hiedrick and Esther Botsford. In 1926 her family moved to San Pedro, California. Etta was an outstanding athlete playing on the All American Girls Professional Baseball League and was featured on the cover of Sports Illustrated. She coached Little League for many years. In 1953, her women's semi-professional volleyball team won the National Championship. She also played beach volleyball throughout Southern California. Even into her mid 80's, Etta bowled on various leagues three times a week, bowling with a 16 pound ball while maintaining a bowling average around 180. Etta loved to laugh, and had a tremendous sense of humor. She retired from Kaiser Hospital, where she worked as a receptionist, and also held a cosmetology license. Preceded in death by daughter, Darlene. Etta is survived by her brother, Larry Botsford (wife Diane); beloved grandson, Daron Hill; stepson, Wayne Fox and children; nephew, Larry Botsford, Jr.; nieces, Kristi Zink (husband Mark); Diania and Tony Lukin; Kim Mendoza (husband Danny); Tina Wells (husband Greg, children Hannah/Garrett); and many others who have had the honor to have called her mother, Gary and Laureen Starkenberg; grandmother, Neil/Lauren Starkenberg; sister, and auntie. Her memorial service will be held on January 15, 2011, 12 noon, First Baptist Church of Long Beach, 1000 Pine Ave, Long Beach 90813.
