Dr. Hugh Richard Pendleton Obituary
Dr. Hugh Richard Pendleton

Dr. Hugh Richard Pendleton of Rolling Hills Estates, California passed away on October 5, 2014 in Chino Hills, CA, at the home of his son, after a brief battle with bone cancer. He was born in Columbus, Ohio on February 25, 1928 to Dr. Paul and Mabel Pendleton. After a move to Southern California, Hugh graduated from Santa Ana High School in 1946. He then received his B.A. from Whittier College in 1952 and a M.A. in 1957 from UCLA. After receiving his Ed.D. in 1970 from USC, Hugh remained a passionate advocate of higher education. He served the country in the U.S. Army, was a school administrator for 30 years, and continued working at Del Mar Avionics for 27 years. He was on the Board of Directors for the South Bay Credit Union for 23 years.

One of his proudest accomplishments was volunteering for the National Ski Patrol for 56 years, primarily at Snow Summit in Big Bear, CA. Hugh was passionate about skiing and skied every season until his death at age 86. He was hoping to complete one more ski season. He loved backpacking in the wilderness, classical music and reminiscing about his broad collection of cars over the years.

His wife, Marilyn, preceded him in death in 1972, after being married for 20 years. He leaves behind his son, Steven (Heidi) of Chino Hills; his daughter, Susan (Doug) Mavor of Bozeman, MT; and grandchildren, Skyler and Alyssa Mavor.

Hugh would be delighted if donations in his memory could be made to the Sierra Club or Habitat for Humanity, both of which were near and dear to his heart.

A Memorial Service and gathering will take place on Friday, November 21st at 1 p.m. at Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes Estates. All are welcome to join in this celebration of a life well lived. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
