James Burschinger Obituary
James A. Burschinger

Long time South Bay resident, James A. "Jim" Burschinger, passed away on August 23, 2016 in the presence of his wife, his children, his daughter-in-law and three of his grandchildren. He was born at home in Coleman, Wisconsin on June 17, 1925 to Dr. Peter and Mary Gertrude Lonsdale Burschinger. After attending local schools, where he was an outstanding basketball player at Coleman High School, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy shortly before his 18th birthday. He served his country in combat in the South Pacific Theater and was honorably discharged in March, 1946. After attending St. Norbert College in DePere, Wisconsin, he transferred to UCLA, where he met Patricia Sullivan in 1949. They married on July 21, 1951 in Mandan, North Dakota and then moved to Madison, Wisconsin where Jim attended the University of Wisconsin Law School and they started their family. After a move to California, the Burschinger family expanded and Jim began his long career with State Farm Insurance. He was always involved in his community with his participation in the South Redondo Little League, the Holy Name Society of St. James Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Redondo Beach Elks Lodge. He and Pat also travelled extensively before and after his retirement from State Farm. They visited Europe (that included a round of golf at St. Andrew's in Scotland) and Asia. Playing golf, following the Green Bay Packers and spending time with his grandchildren occupied his retirement. Jim is survived by Patricia Sullivan Burschinger, his wife of 65 years, his five children, Mary (Mark Levesque) of Solvang, James (Terri) of Redondo Beach, Ann (Mark Thatcher, deceased) of Torrance, John (Laureen) of Camarillo and Paul of San Francisco, ten grandchildren, two cousins and numerous nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Daniel R. Burschinger, of San Marino. Jim will be remembered at a Memorial Mass on August 31, 2016 at St. James Catholic Church, in Redondo Beach, at 10:00 a.m. A reception will follow in the church hall. Burial at Holy Cross Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Knights of Columbus Charities. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed, but his family knows they will be with him again. As the Irish say, "Jim has gone ahead. We will catch up soon".
