James D. Fitzgerald

James Douglas Fitzgerald passed away in the early morning hours of Saturday, December 3, 2011 at Little Company of Mary, San Pedro from esophageal cancer. Jim was born on October 27, 1928 in Torrance, California. He had polio as a child but fully recovered. He joined the Army toward the end of WWII at the age of 16. He served in Korea and was honorably discharged. Following his service in the Army, he attended Loyola University in Westchester, California and earned a degree in accounting. He then went to work at Douglas Aircraft. He joined the company bowling team where he met his future wife, Rita McLaughlin, who was a member of her brother's team. Jim and Rita had two children, Thomas Patrick and Mary Elizabeth. Faith and family were the focus of Jim's life. He was a 45-year parishioner of Mary Star of the Sea, San Pedro. He was an altar server for funerals and often volunteered to help with the church mailings. Jim loved to take his family on car trips and enjoyed the times spent at their vacation spot in Bullhead City, AZ. He loved exploring new places and gave the gift of adventure, curiosity, and love of history to his entire family. Jim collected historic bottles of the American west and enjoyed sharing his collection with the South Bay Historic Bottle Club. Jim found great joy in the lives of his grandchildren, Alison, Maggie, Beth, and Danny. He was a source of good advice and always expressed his unending optimism and confidence in his loved ones. His counsel and help will be sorely missed. Jim is survived by his wife, 2 children, daughter-in-law, Lori; brother, Tom; niece, Patsy; and nephew, Tim and 4 grandchildren. A vigil service will be held on Thursday, December 8, 7:00 p.m. at McNerney's Mortuary Chapel.
