James Tobin Obituary
James Tobin, a 32-year resident of Palos Verdes, passed away February 9, 2011, at the age of 84. A devoted husband and father, and a good friend, Jim demonstrated great kindness, a sense of humor and devout faith throughout his life. He was born in Iowa and grew up with his parents, Thomas and Gertrude and sister, Laura in Dubuque. He attended Loras Academy and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. After the war, Jim served in the Naval Reserve, studied at DePauw University and graduated from University of Michigan. Jim married Patricia Casper in 1954, and together they raised nine children. Jim started his career with Lederle Laboratories, in Seattle. He later moved his family to New Orleans, Detroit and finally to Los Angeles. In 1989, he retired as hospital district manager after 37 years with Lederle Laboratories. In retirement, Jim volunteered at Little Sisters of the Poor in San Pedro and served as an usher at Saint John Fisher Catholic Church. He enjoyed walking the Peninsula with neighbors and friends and traveling with his wife, Pat. Jim is survived by 9 children, 8 grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Jim's memorial service will be held at St. John Fisher Church in Rancho Palos Verdes on Saturday, February 19 at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be sent to: Saint John Fisher Parish Building Project (http://www.sjf.org), Little Sisters of the Poor in San Pedro (http://www.lspsocal.org), or UC Irvine Mind Institute for Memory Impairments and Neurological Disorders (http://www.alz.uci.edu/giving).
