James W. "Bill" Short

Our father, grandfather and great-grandfather passed away peacefully October 15, 2011, at the age of 91. Bill was born May 27, 1920 in Tularosa, New Mexico. The family moved to Coalinga, California in 1926 and eventually moved to Ventura in 1935. He graduated from Ventura High School in 1939 and lived there until joining the Navy in 1942. He served as a radioman in the Atlantic and Pacific until the end of the war. He married Marie Gallagher in 1946 in Philadelphia and they moved to California later that same year. In 1948 he joined the Los Angeles City Fire Department where he worked for 30 years. He spent most of his career in the harbor area on Fireboat 2 and Fireboat 5, where he retired as a scuba diver. He is survived by two sons, five grandchildren, and one great-grandson. He was loved by all who knew him and he will be greatly missed. Services will be Friday, October 21, at 11:30 a.m. at A. M. Gamby Funeral Home, in Lomita. Interment will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park, Rancho Palos Verdes. A. M. Gamby directing. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
