James West Obituary
James H. West

James H. West (Chief) passed away on December 29, 2015 at the age of 93. He was born July 3rd, 1922 in Long Beach, California to James and Dorothy West. He has a younger brother Bob and and a younger sister Dolly who preceded in death. He attended George Washington High School in Los Angeles and Compton College where he played on the football team and ran track and high jump. He married Barbara McBride who lived across the street from him, in 1945. At the time he was serving in the United States Coast Guard stationed on Terminal Island. Jim enjoyed cars, motorcycles, boats, playing golf and body surfing in the ocean. At a young age he started working in the family plumbing business. While working in his father's business (Jimmie West Plumbing) Jim began calling his father, the boss, "Chief." When Jim took over his dad's plumbing business, he became "Chief." Ever since then his family and friends have lovingly called him "Chief." One of his most well-known sayings was "My friends call me Chief; but you can call me Mr. West."

In 1969 Chief was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints by his son in New Zealand. One year later he was sealed to his wife and his family in the Los Angeles, California Temple. The church was a huge part of his life up until the day he passed. Chief and Barbara served a full time mission in Idaho. He was a great missionary and a legendary home teacher who brought many to the faith. He loved working with the Young Men's program of the church and described his experiences with them as some of the best years of his life. He later served as the ward clerk at his home ward for over 25 years.

Jim and Barbara had three children, Mike (Diana), Cindy Allman (Craig), Betsy Telford (Randy). They had 16 grandchildren and 42 great-grandchildren. He was beloved by his family and known for his terrific sense of humor. He had many famous lines that were often quoted by his family and lovingly termed "Chiefisms." He will truly be missed by all that have ever known him and as he describes in his own personal history, "I don't think anyone would say, Jim West had a dull life!" He was preceded in death by the love of his life, Barbara. Funeral Services will be held Saturday January 9th, 2016 at the LDS chapel 5845 Crestridge Road Rancho Palos Verdes, CA at 11:00 AM and viewing at 10:00 AM.
