Born on a tobacco plantation managed by his father in Sumatra, Jan immigrated to the United States from Holland as a child. He served in the Merchant Marine during WWII, followed by a 26-year career as a detective in the Los Angeles Police Department. Since retirement Jan had acted as chaplain for the Los Angeles Retired Fire Police Association. Jan was an artist, oil painter, and a member of the Masons.
