Janice Shields Obituary
Janice Marie Shields
Janice Marie Shields (nee: Sullivan) born January 26, 1921 died in peace of natural causes on March 21 at her Manhattan Beach home at the age of 92. She was in the company of family members when she passed. Her family and friends bid her a tearful farewell. Janice was the second of eleven children born in Petersburg, VA to Charles and Ruby Sullivan. In the 1940's she met her future husband, Arthur Shields while stationed at Ft. Lee, VA. They married in 1946 and moved to Manhattan Beach, CA where Janice actively supported American Martyrs Church and School and was an enthusiastic member of the Altar Society, Dolphin and Neptunian clubs. Janice retired after a successful career as matron with the Manhattan Beach Police Department. Her success was in large part due to the enjoyment of her work and respect for her associates. Janice was a beautiful and vibrant woman, admired by all for her zip, good humor, love of family and friends and her generosity and kindness. She loved life to the fullest. She could walk into any room, not knowing anyone and talk with everyone. Janice was predeceased by her husband, Arthur, who died in 1998, as well as her sister, Eloise Blanks and brother, Robert Sullivan. She leaves behind her children and grandchildren; Susan Hemstock (Manhattan Beach), Patrick Shields (Manhattan Beach) Beatrice Greenwood (Hermosa Beach) Carla Swecker (Lake Forest), Mark Shields (Palm Springs), Michael Shields (Santa Barbara), Summer Beserra (Manhattan Beach), Cortney Wisneski (Redondo Beach) Lauren Gray (Manhattan Beach) Cindy Shields, Casey Shields (Hermosa Beach), Jonathan Swecker (Lake Forest), Jamie Shields (Seattle, Washington), Cortney Meister (Camarillo); eleven great grandchildren (who she adored) and eight brothers and sisters. Janice will be greatly missed by all who knew her. A Memorial Mass will be held at American Martyrs Church on Friday April 12 at 9:00 am.
