1931 - 2012

Jeremy H. Evans passed away January 1, 2012. Jerry was born September 29, 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio, and grew up in the Ocean Beach neighborhood of San Diego. He was the son of a newspaper science writer. Jerry graduated from Point Loma High School and then earned a bachelor's degree in journalism from San Diego State College, where he also ran cross-country and joined the Air Force ROTC. He served his country in the Korean War and became a decorated counter intelligence special agent. After his military service, Jerry began a career as a journalist for the Daily Breeze, and at 26, became the youngest city editor for a regional newspaper in the United States. He went on to found a public relations firm, which he operated while he attended the Southwestern School of Law. On June 28, 1957, he married Louann Freeland, who would be at his side for the rest of his long, happy life. After graduation and admission to the Bar in January of 1966, Jerry established a legal practice and served his community in many great ways for the next forty years. His leadership roles included seats on the Manhattan Beach Planning Commission, the Redondo Beach Chamber of Commerce, the Redondo Corps of the Salvation Army, the South Bay Hospital Board and the South Bay Bar Association, which he served as president of in 1979. In 2002, Jerry received the Judge William E. McFaden Award, which is conferred each year upon a member of the Bench or Bar who made a distinguished, ongoing contribution to the legal community of the South Bay. After his retirement, Jerry and Louann divided their time between their homes in Hermosa Beach and Rancho Mirage. In the desert, he was an active member of Mission Hills Country Club croquet family. Jerry is survived by his loving wife, Louann Freeland Evans; his two sons, Cameron Freeland Evans and Christopher Harrison Evans; his two sisters, Gwen Leopold and Nan Evans; his two grandchildren, Anastasia Lynn Evans and Harrison Freeland Evans. Jerry will be greatly missed by his family and his countless friends.
