Obituary Condolences

Jewel Hulquist Varwig

Our dear mother, Jewel Hulquist Varwig, died peacefully on Christmas morning at the age of 91, after a long convalescence at the Canterbury Retirement Community in Rancho Palos Verdes. Mom was born on September 17, 1922 to loving parents Chauncey and Emma Hulquist in Valentine, Nebraska. Her father considered her his little jewel, hence her name. The family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where Mom studied piano, was an excellent student and received a scholarship to Colorado State University where she earned her BS in home economics in 1944. She met the love of her life, Robert Louis Varwig in 1943, while he was attending the Army Specialist Training program at CSU. Upon graduation, Jewel taught at Amache Japanese Relocation center until the internment camp disbanded in 1945. Next she was offered a fellowship to University of North Carolina and got her master's degree in public in health in 1946. Mom and Dad married in 1946, and Mom worked in Public Health, directed preschool in Chapel Hill, and later taught home economics part time at CSU. When she and Dad started our family, she became a full time homemaker. Our family moved to Los Angeles in 1958, survived the Baldwin Hills dam break 50 years ago, and witnessed the Watts riots of 1965. Jewel was given a lifetime membership in the PTA, having established an immunization program at 54th Street Elementary where we attended. A bit of an activist, she joined neighbors in fighting and defeating an oil company's planned drilling derrick near our home. We moved to Rancho Palos Verdes in 1968, and in the mid 1970s Mom went back to work teaching Health and Science for LAUSD. Mom and Dad were very active at St. Peter's by the Sea Presbyterian Church, and sang in the choir for decades. Mom also enjoyed camping, dancing, attending concerts, museums, PEO activities and long walks. In retirement Mom and Dad traveled extensively abroad as well as visiting friends and family stateside. Jewel loved being a grandmother to her 4 grandkids as much as she loved being our wonderful mother. Mom and Dad had been married for 65 years, when Dad died in March, 2012. Jewel is survived by her sister, Betty Hulquist Sherritt of Boulder CO; her brother-in-law John Varwig of Saint Louis MO; we three daughters: Jana Varwig (Mark Laughlin) of Baltimore MD, Christina Varwig Wylie (Robert) of Palos Verdes Estates CA, and Eleanor Varwig Gage (John) of Vienna VA; four grandchildren, Jennifer Gage, Jamie Gage, Robert Laughlin, Julia Laughlin; and numerous nieces and nephews. Jewel will be remembered by our family as a loving and devoted wife and mother, a woman who knew her own mind and who taught her daughters that women could be successful in anything they set their minds to. A memorial service will take place at St. Peter's by the Sea Presbyterian Church, 6410 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes, on Friday, Jan. 17 at 4:00. (310) 377-6882. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be sent to the Emma Ulsaker Hulquist Memorial Scholarship Endowment Fund, Colorado State University Foundation, P.O. Box 1870, Fort Collins, CO 80522-1870, in memory of Jewel Hulquist Varwig. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
