Joan Yvette Bixler Obituary
Joan passed away at home on December 18, 2010. She was born in Oakes, North Dakota on March 14, 1931. She was predeceased by her husband, Mark, on August 16, 2005, and is survived by her three children, Michele (Jeff) Novick, Blane (Jane) Bixler, and Dennis (Janette) Bixler. Joan had 8 grandchildren, Stacy (Donald) Oliveira, Jennifer (Derek) Difani, Shannon (Todd) Giordano, Jolene (Brandon) Voight, Sara Bixler, Corinne Novick, Kristen Bixler and James Bixler and 10 great-grandchildren. At the time of the depression in 1937 her father moved the family from North Dakota to Los Angeles in order to find work. He found carpentry work and her mother cleaned the apartment house where they lived. Her father later became employed with a large construction company and eventually built their house in South Los Angeles. Joan went to parochial schools and attended Mount St. Mary's College in West Los Angeles. After she and Mark married on May 4, 1957 they both obtained real estate licenses and it became a major part of their life along with raising their three children. Joan began selling real estate in "The Gardens" in 1978 and quickly became a "gardens specialist" touching the lives of everyone she met. Joan and Mark particularly enjoyed summer entertaining in their backyard and camping under the stars. Joan led a very active lifestyle playing tennis, golf, bridge, Bunco and Mah-Jongg, was an active member of Holy Trinity Catholic Church and continued to keep up with her real estate career. She enjoyed gardening, cooking for her family and keeping up her home in Rancho Palos Verdes. Joan Bixler lost her fight to lung cancer on December 18, 2010 and will be missed greatly by her family and friends. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to "Little Sisters of the Poor" at Jeanne Jugan Residence, 2100 S. Western Ave., San Pedro, CA 90732 or to "American Lung Association" at 1301 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20004. Visitation is 10-11 a.m., with graveside service to follow at Green Hills Cemetery on Thursday, December 23, 2010 at noon. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
