John F. Leyman Obituary
John F. Leyman

John, who lived in Long Beach, CA, passed away from complications of pneumonia on Sunday, August 12, 2012. For most of his 86 years, John was very healthy. He was born in Elk Point, SD where he lived until age 18. World War II was drawing to a close, and like many young men of his era, he enlisted in the Army. Upon completing his training, he was stationed in Germany as a member of the occupation forces. After his tour of duty, John returned to Elk Point, and completed his degree in education at the University of South Dakota, Vermillion. In 1950 he moved to Southern California to reunite with his older brothers, Bob and Bill. John's first teaching job was in La Mesa, CA. Two years later, he secured a job teaching in Torrance, where he spent the rest of his career. A dedicated teacher, John always enjoyed working with his students. John is remembered for his sense of humor, his love of conversations with friends and family, his South Dakota roots, his passion for quarter horse racing, and his keen interest in genealogy. John is survived by his sister-in-law, Ardis Leyman; nephews, Bob Leyman (Sharon), John Leyman (Paula) and his niece, Kim Turner (Gary). John had many grand and great-grandnieces and nephews who will remember him fondly. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, August 25, 2012, 2:00 p.m. at the Luyben Family Dilday-Mottell Mortuary, 5161 Arbor Rd., Long Beach, CA 90808. Please sign the guestbook
