John Greenwood, loving husband of Caren Greenwood and father of Elizabeth "Liz" Greenwood, died on October 11, 2012. Greenwood passed away unexpectedly in San Pedro, CA, after suffering a heart attack. He was 67 years old. John had a 45-year career as an educator and civic leader. At the time of his death, John was President of Coro Southern California. His involvement in Coro spanned more than 40 years. A Coro Fellow in 1967, he joined the public affairs organization as director of training immediately after his Fellowship and went on to become the executive director in the 1970s. Greenwood remained involved in the organization and returned as President in 2010. John was elected to the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Board of Education in 1979. He served there for eight years as both a member and its president. During that time, Greenwood was also vice president for development for San Pedro Peninsula Hospital and later operated a successful real estate business. Long active in community affairs, Greenwood served as Chair of the City of Los Angeles Citizens' Oversight Commission for Proposition Q managing a $650M Fire and Police renovation program and was the founding President and a board member of the Northwest San Pedro Neighborhood Council. He was also a founder and later served as President of the Gang Alternatives Program. John served on the boards of numerous community organizations including the San Pedro Boys and Girls Club, the San Pedro Rotary Club and as Vice President of the Board of Directors of Angels Gate Cultural Center. Through the years, John received many awards. He was particularly pleased to be honored as the Community Builder by Habitat for Humanity and to receive the Founders Award from the Southern California Leadership Network. Born on January 9, 1945, Greenwood earned a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Political Science from the University of California, Riverside, and a master's degree in Political Science from the University of Michigan. John is survived by his wife, Caren and daughter, Liz, and his brother Roger (Peggy) Greenwood, sister Marilyn (Savin) Ungaro, sister Kathy (Tom) Jefferies, mother-in-law Martha Matthews, sister-in-law Darlene Allenthorp, fourteen nieces and six nephews. A public viewing has been scheduled for Thursday, October 18, 2012, from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at McNerney's Mortuary, 570 W. 5th Street, San Pedro, California 90731. A Memorial Service and celebration of his life will be on Saturday, October 20, starting at 3:00 P.M. The service will take place at the San Pedro High School Annex: John M. and Muriel Olguin Campus Multipurpose Room, 3210 S. Alma St., San Pedro, CA 90731.
