John P. "Rookie" Rukavina Obituary
John P. Rukavina, aka Rookie, passed away on April 13, 2011, after a two-year battle with myelofibrosis. Born on December 2, 1928, John was a proud 82-year resident of San Pedro. The waterfront was his home, first as a commercial fisherman and then as a 43-year member of ILWU Locals 13 and 94. John served in the Korean War and was awarded the Purple Heart. His passion was the open seas, cruising the world with his wife. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Catherine; sons, Ken (Diane) and John; daughter, Susan; grandchildren, Adrienne and Nick; brother, Anthony (Stella); mother-in-law, Eva Mardesich; brothers-in-law, Mitch Mardesich, Pete (JoAnn) Mardesich and Joe (MaryAnn) Mardesich; and numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by parents, Ivan and Winifred Rukavina, and sister, Katherine Rukavina. He will be missed by all who knew him. The family thanks his physicians, Doctors Hsieh, Pham, and Scherschun at Kaiser Permanente for their wonderful care. Visitation will be held Sunday, April 17, 2011 at McNerney's Mortuary from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A Funeral Mass will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Monday, April 18, 2011 at 10:00 a.m. The family requests that In lieu of flowers, contributions be made to the Mary Star of the Sea High School Building Fund, 2500 N.
