John Phillip Schwartz

November 1921 - October 2012

John Schwartz, a longtime resident of Torrance, California passed away peacefully on October 2, 2012 at a nursing facility in Modesto, CA. He was 90 years old. Born in Webster, South Dakota to Edward and Cora Schwartz on November 26, 1921, he moved with his parents to Torrance in 1922 where he lived and worked until 2011. John attended Torrance High School and the University of Southern California. He joined the Navy near the end of WWII, served in the Pacific and then was recalled to active duty during the Korean conflict. Following the war, he managed Schwartz Men's Store in downtown Torrance. In 1926, John, at the age of 5, along with his mother and brother Bob, became founding members of First Lutheran Church of Torrance. Throughout his life, John proudly served in many leadership capacities for the church and took great pride in his involvement in every church building program especially the founding and growth of the school. After his retirement, John joined the Coast Guard Auxiliary where he enjoyed assisting on harbor patrols, staffing boat shows and leading classes on boating safety. In November 2011 after celebrating his 90th birthday with family and friends he and Florence moved to Samaritan Village in Hughson, CA. He is survived by his wife, Florence; a brother, Robert C. (San Marcos, CA); two daughters, Lisa (Eric) Youngborg (Lexington Park, MD) and Susan Wright (Turlock, CA); three grandchildren, Amy (Paul) Miller (Clifton Heights, PA) Michael (Katie) Wright (Houston, TX), and Dustin (Jennifer) Wright (Ceres, CA); six great grandchildren (Adam, Braden, Weston, Hailey, Alyssa and his special buddy Connor) and nieces, Bethany Smith (Hilmar, CA) and Melinda (Dave) Fannin (Logan, UT).
