John Smith Obituary
John Smith

John was born in 1925 to Harry and Lydia Smith in Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He was preceded in death by his wife Cecilia and his three brothers James, Aubrey and Gorden. His only surviving sibling is his sister Iris of Cape Town, his son Michael Smith, his wife Diane and his granddaughter Michelle of Long Beach. Also surviving, is his long time and dear friend Rita Madigan. John would rank with the saints in his deep devotion and love of the Blessed Virgin Mary, he was in the habit of even praying the Rosary in his sleep! Now, he will share all eternity with his Creator, the love of his very life. His greatest joy was to have been converted to the Catholic faith from Anglicanism. Many, many times he would say "it's so good to be a Catholic." After teaching school and immigrating with Celia from Cape Town, John continued his teaching career at Mary Star of the Sea School. That career lasted 23 years. Returning to Cape Town when Cecilia became ill and died, he returned to San Pedro at the suggestion of Louise DiCarlo, a long time friend, and became a resident at Little Sisters of the Poor. Some time later when John was in his 70s and 80s he was recognized around town by countless students and parents! They'd exclaim Mr. Smith Mr. Smith-- remember me, you taught me and my kids back in the 4th grade, they would say "he taught my child!" John had the gift of purity of speech, never an impure word, he had a huge sense of humor, quick wit, and was widely known for his famous never-ending puns. He was a very kind and gentle man with that constant sparkle in his eyes. John was included as a member of our family by Sheri Barter, and at the holiday celebrations by Laurie Young. He is so loved and will always be most deeply and dearly missed. We thank the Little Sisters, nurses and aids and friends who extended such great care for John. This story is the heart of who John Smith was. Nothing less. Till we meet again John. The Mass of the Resurrection and Christian burial were held January 11. If you feel so inclined, please consider sending a donation to the Little Sisters of the Poor: 2100 So. Western Ave., San Pedro 90732, (310)548-0625. Thank you dear friends.
