Jon Knickerbocker Obituary
Jon Rogers Knickerbocker

Strolling on The Strand, snorkeling in Kauai, finding sand dollars in Seaside, Oregon, Jon Knickerbocker loved the beach and the ocean. This love was surpassed only by his deep devotion and closeness to his family. On May 16, 2015, in full view of the ocean and surrounded by loving family members, Jon peacefully passed on in his home in Hermosa Beach. Jon was a loving and committed husband and father. He was passionate about spending time with his family and friends.
Jon was born in Seaside, Oregon on September 24, 1938. He moved to Palos Verdes where he attended Malaga Cove Intermediate School and Redondo Union High School. He attended University of Oregon and California State University Long Beach, where he met his wife and best friend, Jan. Both were English majors in graduate school.
Jon and Jan married in 1961. Throughout their 53 years of marriage, they were consistently by each other's sides. A special highlight each day was watching the sunset and hoping to catch a glimpse of the illusive "green flash."
Jon worked part-time at the Daily Breeze during high school and college. He taught English and yearbook at Redondo Union High School and then moved to the PVPUSD where he worked for 35 years. He was a teacher, counselor, and assistant principal at Rolling Hills High School. His employment at the school district culminated when he was Deputy Superintendent of Schools; he retired in 1998.
Honored for his lifelong commitment to education, Jon was named Administrator of the Year in PVPUSD and during the Redondo High School Centennial Celebration in 2005 was included as one of the one hundred outstanding graduates.
Preceded in death by his parents, Dane and Katherine Knickerbocker, and sister, Linda, Jon is survived by his wife Jan; daughter, Tracey Carr and her children, Tennaya and Cadyn; daughter & son-in-law, Kerri and Glenn Griffee and their children, Shane and Kevin; sister & brother-in-law Janice & Kevin Steinkraus; niece Jamie, her husband Chris, their daughter Maddie; nephew Jim; and numerous cousins.
In lieu of a memorial service, the family will honor Jon's life with a celebration at the family home in Hermosa Beach in late summer. Those wishing to honor Jon are requested to donate to the at www.alz.org. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits
