Joseph Falcone Obituary
Joseph Mayo Falcone

Joseph Mayo Falcone, 95, died February 27, 2015, with his wife, daughter, and son-in-law by his side. He was born on May 1, 1919, in San Pedro to Giovanni Battista Falcone of Sestri Levante, Italy and Amelia Rose (Ghiotto) Falcone of Los Angeles, California. His father was a fisherman and one of the pioneering families of the industry in San Pedro. Mr. Falcone, more commonly known as Joya, was the youngest of seven children and a very active child. He enjoyed time on Catalina Island, a place that he cherished his entire life. This fondness began as a young boy when he would accompany his four brothers to the island while they fished and he was left to his own devices to swim and explore. Joya began his career in the fishing industry as an engineer. He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in June of 1941. He later served in the Navy during World War II as a Motor Machinist Mate 1st Class on the U.S.S. Chestnut, which operated in the South Pacific. Joya's last job was as an engineer for Wrigley Towing. His interests included spending time with his family, walking as far as his legs could take him, chewing the fat with friends, hot coffee, sitting at the table with his beloved wife while looking out the kitchen window, and planning his next trip to Catalina Island. Joya is survived by his wife, Mary (Lauro) Falcone; his daughter Joyette (Falcone) Mosich and her husband George; his granddaughter Marisa (Mosich) Kunich and her husband John; his granddaughter Christy (Mosich) French and her husband Michael; four great-grandchildren; and his sister, Margarita Y. Falcone; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Anthony J. Falcone. A visitation will be held at McNearny's Mortuary on Wednesday, March 4 from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. A funeral mass will be held at Mary Star of the Sea Church on Thursday, March 5 at 10:30 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in memory of Joseph Falcone to the Catalina Island Conservancy.
