Joseph John Lang

Joseph John Lang, known as "Joe" to all, was born April 19, 1928 in Nespice, Czechoslovakia Republic, passed away peacefully January 28, 2017 at his home in La Jolla, California.

Joe is survived by his wife, Helen Raich Lang. He was preceded in death by their son, Robert Sheridan Lang, Christine (widowed). Joe is survived by their 5 grandchildren: Robert Lang Jr., (Melissa) and kids, Jake, Cooper and Anna; Julianne Lang Thomas (Mark) and kids, Chase and Connor; Daniel Lang (Ashley); Kaitlyn Lang; and Elizabeth Lang; sisters-in-law, Mary Raich Roupoli and Lucille Raich Brickner Pophoff; and several nieces and nephews.

During World War II, as Czechoslovakia was starting to turn communist, Joe was able to escape, unable to say a word to anyone, leaving his mother and father, brother and two sisters behind. He made it to Canada and immediately found his way to his uncle in Illinois. He worked on his uncle's farm and eventually applied to the University of Illinois later in 1953.

Joe was a Corporal in the Korean War and was enlisted January 8, 1951 to December 26, 1952. He was a translator for the U.S. Army and was stationed in Germany. Joe was highly educated at the University of Illinois, with a BS in Science, 1956; then went to Stanford for an MS in Electrical Engineering, 1957; and finally at Michigan State, with a PhD in Electrical Engineering, 1961.

Joe started working for Bell Labs in 1961 as an Electrical Engineer designing and working on electrical applications for phones, cable, computers, satellites, and the Space Shuttle. Later on, Joe became Director of the Digital Transmission Laboratory with Bell Labs. Joe also worked for AT&T. He retired in 1988.
