Josephine Janis Bender Obituary
Jo was born in Chicago on September 20, 1918, to Lithuanian immigrant parents, and died peacefully in her home in San Pedro, CA. on August 13, 2011. She received her RN degree in 1942 from the University of Illinois. She worked in several medical fields from maternity to internal medicine for almost fifty years. Jo married the love of her life, Eddie Bender, in 1946, and in 1949, their little girl, Beverly Ayn, arrived. The family relocated to Ridgewood, New Jersey in 1956 to pursue Eddie's engineering career. Jo set nursing aside briefly to work as the children's librarian at the Paramus New Jersey Public Library, and to spend more time with her daughter's education and performing arts interests. 1971 saw another move across the country to the Los Angeles area, where she resumed her nursing career…this time as an administrative manager for two internists. After her husband, Eddie passed away in 1994, Jo spent many years as an active member of the Friday Morning Club of San Pedro, where she served as President for a number of years. She and her little rescue Maltese, Murphy, became a delightful and constant presence in "The Gardens" as they strolled on their daily walks, meeting and greeting friends and neighbors! Jo is survived by her daughter, Beverly Ayn, of Redondo Beach; and her brother, Tony Janis, who resides in the Chicago area. Services will be held at Saint Margaret Mary Catholic Church on Wednesday, August 17, 2011. The Rosary and a gathering of family and friends will be held at 9:30 AM, followed by a Funeral Mass celebration at 10:00 AM. Burial will take place at a later date at Saint Casmir Cemetery in Chicago. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
