Kitty Sopp Obituary
Kitty Sopp
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Catherine "Kitty" McGowen Sopp of Palos Verdes Estates and Long Beach on Monday, September 15, 2014 from a rare form of neuroendocrine cancer. She was only 67 years old. Born at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica to Dolores and Jackson R. McGowen, she was the second of three daughters. After attending University Elementary School, Marlboro School, and Long Beach Poly, Kitty became a member of Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority at The University of Southern California. Here, she met Randy C. Sopp, and they were married on June 14, 1967. Always active in the lives of her three children, Kitty was a school volunteer, Girl Scout troop leader, avid school sports and drama fan and constant cheerleader. She was also active in Junior League, Nightingales and parent groups. Kitty's silly sense of humor always made us laugh, and her perfectionism and talent made every event, from a family BBQ to a Gala Dinner Dance, something special and second-to-none. Her care for others was always evident by her cheery smile and actual interest in those around her. While working at the family business, Maurice J. Sopp Son Chevrolet, Kitty always had an open ear and the ability to see the talents of her co-workers. Her support and caring helped many achieve their goals of success. Her vision and skill at remodeling homes and creating lavish gardens was legendary. Every home that she touched was elegantly and spectacularly made better with her decorating finesse and eye for space, color and flow. Kitty is survived by her husband, Randy C. Sopp; her children, Tracy Ferrara (Steve), Ken Sopp (Yvonne) and Emily Bower (Brian); grandchildren, AJ Ferrara, Alex Ferrara, Katie Sopp, Allie Sopp, Charlotte Bower and Teddy Bower; sisters, Margaret McGowen and Betty Wynne (Marty); and many cousins, in-laws, nieces, nephews and dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dolores and Jackson McGowen. A memorial service will be held at the Neighborhood Church in Palos Verdes Estates on September 25, 2014 at 11:00am. Flowers may be sent to the Neighborhood Church.
