Kurt H. Rathman Obituary
May 14, 1912 to December 7, 2010

Kurt H. Rathman, a San Pedro resident for more than 55 years, passed away on December 7, 2010 at the age of 98. He was born in Grand Island, Nebraska on May 14, 1912, as the first of two children to Hans and Clara Rathman, followed by his sister Marguerite in 1915. A veteran of World War II, he was a member of the Army Air Corps and flew the "Hump" of China as a pilot and navigator out of Dhaka and Kunming to Shanghai and Beijing. After the war, he became a professional photographer and worked for Sawyers, Inc. (later GAF) taking stereo photographs of the country's national parks, landmarks and amusement parks for View-Master reels and Pana-Vue slides. During his almost 30 years with Sawyers/GAF, he worked with people such as Walt Disney, Henry Knott and Dr. Charles Schroeder, developing View-Master photo packages and designing "photo trails" that helped park visitors take valuable souvenir photos of their visits to Disneyland, Knott's Berry Farm and the San Diego Zoo. He spent the last seven years before his retirement in 1977, as the Exhibit Manager for the main Camera Exhibit and annex camera shops at Disneyland. An avid golfer, fisherman and story teller, he played in numerous pro-am golf events for charity, and was a member of the Fort MacArthur Gun and Rod Club and the Yugoslav-American Club. In addition, he was a member of both San Pedro's Christ Lutheran Church and Lodge 966 of the Benevolent Protective Order of Elks for more than 50 years. He is pre-deceased by his sister, Marguerite Neville Kusel, and survived his wife, Irene; his son, Steve; his daughter, Kim; his nephew, Hans Neville; and his niece, Jean Bangs. Funeral services will be held at Christ Lutheran Church, 28850 S. Western Avenue in San Pedro on Friday, December 17, 2010 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be given to Milestone Hospice.
