Leonard James Speltz

Age 79, passed away peacefully in the comfort of his home on March 22, 2016 following a courageous 21 year battle with Parkinson's disease. He was born April 16, 1936 in New Hampton, Iowa to Bernard and Marie Speltz. He was raised there and graduated from New Hampton High School in l954. He earned a Bachelor of Science Degree from Loras College in Physics in 1958 and attended graduate schools in Engineering and Executive Management at the University of Iowa, the University of Minnesota, USC and UCLA.

Len met the love of his life, Corrine, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. They were married in August 1961 and have made their home in Palos Verdes for 50 years. Their four children were raised in this home.

Len worked as an Engineer and Program Manager in the Aerospace, Electronics and Telecommunication Industries for 36 years. He was employed by Collins Radio, Hughes Aircraft, General Dynamics and TRW. He traveled extensively throughout North America, Europe, South America, Asia and Africa during his career. Len retired from the TRW Space and Electronics Group in 1996.

Most importantly Len Speltz will always be remembered as an outstanding husband, father and family man. He dedicated much of his time as a head coach on numerous youth football, baseball and softball teams on the Palos Verdes Peninsula during the 1970's and 80's. At St. John Fisher Church he was active as an Eucharistic Minister to the Homebound and at mass besides being a member of the Divine Mercy Group. Also a favorite ministry for him was serving Christian Outreach in Action for numerous years.

Len is survived by his wife of 54 years, Corrine, and children, John (Pilar), Christy Lee (Steve), Mike (Lorena) and Dan. He was a beloved grandfather to Jessica and Joshua Lee, Derick, Andrew, Nicolas and Isabella Speltz. He is also survived by his brothers, Norman, Gordon (Vonnie), Cyril (Joan), sisters, Nora (Ray), Mary Lou (Dennis), sister-in-law Kay, and many nieces and nephews. Len is predeceased by his parents; and brothers, Bennie and Arnie; sister, Lorraine, sisters-in-law, Marie and Nancy; and brother-in-law, Johnny Ball.

A funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 23, at St. John Fisher Church, Rancho Palos Verdes. A reception will follow afterwards.
