Lois (Arseneau) Gertsch

Mrs. Lois (Arseneau) Gertsch of Hawthorne, California died at 8:10 p.m. on Sunday, July 8, 2012 at home with her family by her side. Mrs. Gertsch was born April 13, 1925 in Champaign, Illinois. She married Frederick A. Gertsch on January 13, 1946. Family was most important to her and she was a loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, sister and aunt. She is survived by her three sons, Robert Michael (Sheran), William Frederick (Christine), and Thomas Arseneau (Pamela), six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and other extended family. Lois also leaves her dear niece MaryLou Grace and her husband David and five children. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents Camille Arseneau and Lorena Boudreau Arseneau of Champaign, Illinois, twin sister Louise Olmsted, sister Mary Ellen Diggles, and brothers Ralph, Tom, and Robert Arseneau. Lois was employed as a Teachers Aide by Wiseburn School District for 25 years. She was a tireless volunteer for the city of Hawthorne, Hawthorne High School, Wiseburn School District, Boy Scouts of America, PTA for her children and grandchildren, Little League, the Police Department Canine Unit, the Hawthorne and Lawndale Senior Centers, the Gadabouts, and TOPS. Lois received numerous honors during her lifetime of dedication to these organizations including "Mother of the Year" by the Boy Scouts, proud parent of three Eagle Scouts, Honorary Service Award for the PTA, Outstanding Citizen of the Year for the City of Hawthorne in 1993, and Hawthorne High School 2011 Annual Volunteer Appreciation Day Award. Lois was a talented poet and received an award in Washington D.C. in 1990 for her poem "My Other Half", referring to her twin sister Louise! She loved to travel, was creative in crocheting and crafts and loved her crossword puzzles and playing cards with her Friday night card group. Visitation will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery in Culver City on Thursday, July 12, 2012 from 3pm to 8pm with Rosary at 6:30 pm. Funeral service will be held at Holy Cross Cemetery on Friday, July 13, 2012 at 12:30 p.m. in the Risen Christ Chapel.
