Marshall Stewart Obituary
Stewart, Marshall Edward
Marshall was born in Oregon in 1923, and moved to Southern California at the age of three. From that time forward, the Hollywood Riviera was his home.He attended Redondo Union High School, and went on to attend the Merchant Marine Academy in New York. Marshall joined the Merchant Marine to serve during World War II, and spent most of the war in the South Pacific and the Philippines. During shore leave in San Francisco, he met Bette Jean McCaleb, and five years later he returned to San Francisco and courted and married her in 1949.Marshall and Bette built their family home in 1956, and raised their three children there. Marshall was active in Little League, coaching for his sons' teams, and spent much time and energy supporting the Torrance YMCA. Marshall was known for his ability and willingness to fix just about anything. Over the years, Marshall also became the living historian of Redondo and Torrance, and was often asked to share his old photos and memories of growing up on the"sand dunes" that have since become Palos Verdes and the Hollywood Riviera. Marshall had a beautiful life, full of curiosity and love and laughter. He was probably most at home when at or on the ocean, and grew up an avid surfer and sailor. He loved to talk and tell stories, and was never too busy to help a neighbor or stop and pet a dog. Marshall was preceded in passing by his wife, Bette, and son, Larry. He is survived by his son, Doug, daughter Anne, and his much-loved granddaughters, Britt and Ashley. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donating to the Torrance YMCA in Marshall's memory.
