Martha B. Northup Obituary
Martha B. Northup, of Hermosa Beach, passed away April 24, at the age of 94. Martha Eleanor Bragger was born in Exeter, Maine, September 23, 1917 to William Bucknall Bragger and Bessie Wentworth Bragger. She was educated at the Higgins Classical Institute in Charleston, Maine, graduating in 1935. She came to California in 1936, to live with her aunt, Dr. Lillian Noble, in Chula Vista. In 1937, she married Army Air Force serviceman Jack Bohanan, moved to Santa Monica, and had two daughters. Divorced in 1942 and living in West Los Angeles, she worked at North American Aviation for 8 years. In 1945, she married Robert B. Northup, an artist and photographer. They moved to Hermosa Beach in 1947 and had one daughter. Martha sang in the St. Cross Episcopal Church choir 15 years, the Mother Singers 2 years, and Sweet Adelines 10 years. Singing in competition quartets, she won regional prizes as a member of the D-Rangers in 1963 and the Classigals in 1968. She was also a founding member of the Hermosa Beach Garden Club and was a fine tailor. She square-danced weekly with the King Harbor Squares until about 3 years ago. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Northup, and her sisters, Frances Stevens and Willimina Donnelly. She is survived by her three daughters, Janet Quillin of Redondo Beach, Sharon Kissack of NY, and Virginia Felix of NM; seven grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
