Martin Popelka Obituary
Martin F. Popelka Jr.

February 21, 1925 - November 30, 2014

Born in Cicero, Illinois, to Martin and Mae Popelka, Martin excelled in school and achieved distinction on the baseball field as a catcher for the Junior American League Baseball Team. After graduating from the University of Chicago with a Bachelor of Science degree, Martin moved to Southern California where he spent his career in the aerospace and defense industry that included employment at Northrop-Grumman and TRW (30 yrs.) where he worked in the engineering departments with a specialty in navigation systems. In 1965 he married his beloved and much cherished wife, Jean Ann Sladek (died 2004), and settled in their Manhattan Beach home. Together they shared a passion for travel, the study and collection of Shaker furniture, hiking in the high Sierras, reading, ski trips that took them to Mammoth Mt., Aspen, Park City, Sun Valley as well as St Moritz and Zermatt, Switzerland. As a couple, they "surrounded themselves with things they loved," including good friends. Martin was an avid golfer, history buff and a lifelong member of the Freemasons of the State of Illinois. He is survived by his older brother George; sister-in-law Mary Ann; and nephew George, Jr. Martin's ashes, as well as those of his wife, Jean Ann, were scattered in the Pacific Ocean off Manhattan Beach. Donations honoring Martin's memory may be made to the Sierra Club. Visit www.lafuneral.com to send the family messages and share memories. Sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com.
