Mary Duffin Obituary
Mary Alice Duffin

Mary Alice Bullen Duffin passed away on Friday, November 7, 2014 in the comfort of her home and in the presence of her family after losing a valiant battle with breast cancer.

Mary Alice was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on September 22, 1928. She is the daughter of Alice Charlotte Jones and Herschel Keith Bullen. Ten months after her birth, her mother tragically died of cancer. Mary Alice grew up in Spanish Fork, Utah in the home of her beloved maternal grandparents, Elias and Helga Bjarnson Jones who she thereafter referred to as mother and father. They were the parents of eleven children, and they happily took on the responsibility of rearing Mary Alice as well. She loved them as if they were her own parents.

As a youth, Mary Alice loved to sing, play piano and flute, embroider, and dance. She also enjoyed participating in church activities. She attended schools and church in Spanish Fork and went on to graduate from Brigham Young University with a major in elementary education. Afterwards she taught first grade in Tooele, Utah for three years. It was there that she met and married her husband, James Marlo Duffin, in 1952, a marriage that lasted 62 years. They became the parents of five children. They also have fifteen grandchildren.

Mary Alice and her husband moved to Northern California where her husband worked as a mechanical engineer for Shell Oil Company. She lovingly cared for her four young children while her husband went to dental school at the University of CA in San Francisco. In 1967, Mary Alice gave birth to her fifth child and the family settled in Palos Verdes, so that her husband could begin his orthodontic practice in Manhattan Beach which lasted 43 years.

Mary Alice is survived by her husband, James Marlo Duffin, Sr., her children James Marlo Duffin, Jr., Michael Drew Duffin, Debra Lou Duffin Coaloa, Sylvie Duffin Raoux, and Scott Bullen Duffin, and fifteen grandchildren. She is a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.

The Mary Alice Duffin viewing will be held on Friday, November 14 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm at Gamby Funeral Home, 25001 Narbonne Ave., Lomita, CA 90717. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 15 at 11:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Palos Verdes Stake Center, 5845 Crestridge Rd., Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (www.bcrfcure.org). Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com.
