Manhattan Beach resident Mary Ellen Hodge, 86, passed away on January 20 after a long illness. Mary Ellen was born in Temple City, in the San Gabriel Valley, graduated from Mark Keppel High School in 1945, and attended the University of California at Santa Barbara. For many years she lived in Hermosa Beach and Manhattan Beach and was a popular teacher of 6th and 8th grade students at Newton School in Torrance. When she was a teenager, Mary, who was trained by her father, was a champion rifle shooter, winning 50 medals and judged the best girl shooter in the United States. She was a long-time member of Camp Fire Girls and, later, an outstanding camp counselor. As an adult, she loved attending tennis matches and was also active in Cat Fanciers' Association and Tonks West, a club dedicated to Tonkinese cats. Mary also traveled extensively to Europe, Africa, and China. She was loved and respected by her many friends and neighbors and will be missed. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
