Maria Francesca Giacalone, a life long resident of San Pedro, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2012 in her home surrounded by family. Mary was born August 6, 1922 in San Pedro and graduated from San Pedro High School in 1941. She was proud of her family, her community and her faith, and was loved by everyone who knew her. She was an honorary life member of the Leland Street Elementary School PTA. Mary served four years as president of the Town and Country Catholic Woman's Club, and held catechism classes in her home garage on 18th and Cabrillo for 10 years. She was chairman of the Catholic Maritime Luncheons for four years. Mary was honored for her many years of community service receiving the Chamber of Commerce Woman of the Year Award in 1963 and the Mother Seton Award in 1991. Along with her continued community work with the Mary Star of the Sea Christian Care program, she and husband, Vito travelled the world and enjoyed the Retired Elks luncheons and trips. She will be missed by Vito, her husband of 65 years; children, Teresa (Ralph) Appy, Vic, and Maryann (Mark) Shaner; grandchildren, David Appy, Melissa (Gjoe) Lopez, Michael Appy, and Gina and Tricia Shaner; great granddaughter Alexis Lopez, and a great grandson due in February; sisters, Francesa (Nicholas) Giacalone, and Sarah (Vito) Giusa; sister-in-law, Rosalie Giacalone; brother-in-law, Gene Giacalone; and many nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews. Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. All that knew her would agree that Mary was as beautiful inside as out. She was known for her ever-present smile, genuine love of people and life, and her words of encouragement. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in her memory be made to or Mary Star of the Sea Parish, Christian Care Program. The Rosary will be recited on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. with the Funeral Mass to follow at 10:30 a.m. Both services will be held at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in San Pedro.
