Mary Marjorie Hodor Obituary
Mary Marjorie
"Margie" Hodor

1930-2014

Mary Marjorie Hodor of Palos Verdes Estates passed away August 18, 2014 following a courageous battle with cancer. She was 84 years old.

"Margie" was born in Auburn, Nebraska to Lulu F. and James W. Arnold. She moved to Des Moines, attending and graduating from Roosevelt High School and Drake University. Along with her beloved sister, Dorothy, she was a proud member of the Kappa Alpha Theta Sorority.

Margie married Albert G. Hodor of East Chicago in 1951. They had 4 children and were fortunate to live in and raise their family in several wonderful neighborhoods around the United States. She was the most incredible mother and wife.

Their 33-year marriage ended sadly in 1984 when Al passed away from cancer. Margie summoned all her strength and courage and went back to school at 54 to earn her RN degree. Margie worked as an allergy nurse for Bay Shores Medical Group in Torrance for 16 years. The friendships she made with her co-workers and patients were among her favorite memories.

Throughout her life, Margie was a beacon of friendliness and love for all those around her. She always put others needs in front of her own. Margie's patients and co-workers adored her. Being a nurse was the perfect profession for this loving servant of God.

In her retirement, Margie maintained her cottage home and English garden in Palos Verdes Estates, welcoming family to gather and celebrate holidays and birthdays, or simply just drop in to hang out with "Mom". Watercolors, sketches, coupons and crossword puzzles could be found throughout her home along with a home cooked meal and a huge smile. She enjoyed reading books on spirituality and Christianity, following politics, gardening and playing with her grandchildren.

Margie is preceded in death by her husband, Albert G. Hodor; sister, Dorothy Jean Ferryman, and daughter, Mary Elizabeth Sheller. She is survived by three children, Susan Christine Hodor, James Albert Hodor and Benjamin Arnold Hodor; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, Memorial donations may be made to Margie's favorite charities, City of Hope in Duarte, CA or to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.

The family wishes to extend their deep gratitude to Dr. Erik Milefchik, Dr. John Abe, and Dr. Wade Nishimoto for supporting her wish to fight the good fight to be with her family as long as possible. Most of all, our love and appreciation for her caregiver, Mariel Phillips, for demonstrating the beauty and dignity of loving patient care throughout her illness and in her final days.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, September 6th. Contact Ben Hodor at [email protected] for further details. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
