Mary Ruth Bruce Obituary
Mary Ruth Bruce, a 40-year resident of Torrance, passed away on Sunday, August 15, 2010 from complications of MS. Born in Fort Worth, Texas to George Burns and Lula Young, Mary was 63 when she died. She came to the Los Angeles area as a child and lived in numerous locations before settling in the South Bay in 1956. She graduated from Gardena High School in 1964 and married her high school sweetheart, Ron, later that year. Two sons were added to the family by 1969. In 1971, she became one of the first two female reserve officers for the city of Gardena. She attained the rank of sergeant in July of 1974. She had worked for Acacia Associates as an insurance solicitor for the last 20 years and her boss, John Sabio, became her cherished friend. Mary loved to travel and considered gambling, particularly video poker as one of her favorite hobbies. One of her passions in life was art, and many of her pen and ink drawings of animals are owned by persons in the South Bay. She was a fan of old movies and became an expert in movie trivia. She was a strong willed woman who fought hard to overcome the limitations of her illness and was always looking for a way to have fun. Mary is survived by her husband of 46 years, Ronald Bruce; sons, Brian Bruce (Sandy) and Paul Bruce (David Phillips) of South Carolina; grandchildren, Savanna and Brandon Bruce; sister, Gladys "Cass" Garcia and Mary's mother, Lula Ehrhardt. She was preceded in death by her father, George O. Burns. The service will be held at the chapel at Rice Mortuary on Monday, August 30, 2010 at 2:00 p.m. There will be a reception in Rice's Lighthouse Reception Room from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Guests are asked to accompany the family to their home in Torrance.
