Mary Una VanLiere Seifert Obituary
Mary Una Van Liere Seifert

October 29, 1915 -
March 25, 2015

Our beloved Mary, age 99, died peacefully in her sleep in Redondo Beach, California, on March 25, 2015. Mary, an independent, adventurous spirit who loved travel and conversation, knew her own mind and made sure you knew it, too. For Mary it was always "Game on!" The fourth of nine children, Mary was born on October 29, 1915, to Carrie Beloat and Peter Van Liere. Mary grew up on the Van Liere ranch and attended a one-room school in Liberty, Arizona. In 1940, she graduated from Arizona Teachers College in Tempe, now Arizona State University. In her early career, she taught on the Navajo Reservation in Chinle, Arizona, and at Buckeye Union High School in Buckeye, Arizona when brothers Pete and George were students. In 1945, Mary earned a Master of Arts in Home Economics from Columbia University in New York and worked as a Home Economist for several food companies before heading west. Mary landed at Redondo Union High School in the early 1950's where she taught Home Economics, took a year long sabbatical in 1960 to travel around the world, and met her husband Mel Seifert, a much revered teacher/coach at Redondo Union High School, whom she married in 1963. After retirement in 1973, Mary traveled and fished with Mel, volunteered at the Redondo Beach Library, and stayed busy with various sewing projects which she bestowed on family and friends. She enjoyed her large extended family as well as many friends and acquaintances, all of whom were welcome for visits and beach time in Redondo. Those who knew Mary recall her wit, her accomplishments in the home arts, and her interest in the world around her. A gregarious individual, she was generous and loyal to family and friends. Mary is survived by her sister Willia Stone and many loving family members and friends of all ages in whose memories Mary's indomitable spirit lives on.
